Zelda Spindrift's evolved from buying a used Bernina embroidery machine on Ebay over 10 yrs ago.. I think I played with it for a few days and thought it was pretty cool being able to embroider words onto things. I started Uni not long after and it got shoved under the bed and forgotten about.
18 months later and 2 new babies, I rediscovered the machine somewhere under my bed. I had always sewed clothes for myself and my children and was intrigued by being able to embellish my creations myself. I thought it would be nice to make modern cloth nappies and wool pilchers (nappy covers) instead of putting them in disposable nappies. After finding patterns online, my littlies had hand dyed and embroidered organic bamboo nappies. I made wool pilchers and decided they were rather boring so I embroidered on them too.
Up until that point I had only seen 'old school' embroidery. You know, lovely floral doilies and lacy things that were seen at Nanna's house. I'm not a floral person and I have sons. I was pretty sure my boys wouldn't like floral nappies either. All this was back when we were on dial up internet so Googling things took awhile. And then I found it. Urban Embroidery. And that's where it began...
